Liraglutide (Saxenda/Victoza): the daily GLP-1 before the weeklies

With all the attention on the weekly GLP-1 drugs, it is easy to forget liraglutide, the daily injectable that came first. It is FDA approved as Victoza for diabetes and Saxenda for weight management, with the LEADER cardiovascular trial and the SCALE obesity program behind it.

It is solidly Tier 1. The main practical difference people discuss versus the weeklies is the daily injection schedule and a somewhat smaller average weight effect than the newest agents.

The daily injection schedule is the main real-world adherence difference versus the weekly agents, and it likely contributes to the somewhat smaller average effect seen in practice.

Still a Tier 1 workhorse though, and the LEADER cardiovascular data give it a stronger evidence base than most of the newer options can claim yet.
