Afamelanotide (Scenesse) vs Melanotan I confusion

There is constant confusion here. Afamelanotide is an FDA-approved drug (Scenesse), delivered as a subcutaneous implant, to increase pain-free light exposure in erythropoietic protoporphyria. It is sometimes loosely called Melanotan I.

The approval is for that specific photoprotection indication, not cosmetic tanning. The fact that an approved alpha-MSH analog exists does not transfer safety or efficacy to unregulated tanning peptides.

The implant delivery is another reason the approved product is not comparable to the injectable gray-market versions. Same molecule family, very different product and oversight.
